VDE-AR-N 4130 – Technical Connection Rules for Extra-High Voltage

VDE-AR-N 4130 (“TAR Extra-High Voltage”) defines the requirements for the connection and operation of customer installations on the extra-high voltage grid (≥ 220 kV). It applies to generators, consumers, storage facilities, and mixed installations and implements the European Network Codes “Requirements for Generators (RfG)” and “Demand Connection Code (DCC)” in Germany.

The scope of VDE-AR-N 4130

  • Grid connection of large wind farms (onshore/offshore), conventional power plants, industrial parks, and large consumers
  • Voltage level: 220 kV and higher
  • Goal: Uniform, Europe-wide compliant connection rules for system stability and grid security

Essential requirements of VDE-AR-N 4130

  • Active power adjustment in case of over/under frequency
  • Fault Ride Through (FRT) – Riding through grid faults
  • Provision of control power
  • Submission of simulation models
  • Uniform verification procedures (System certificate type A for series systems)

Amendment & Innovations (2024/2025)

  • Grid-forming properties for battery storage (BESS) mandatory
  • Minimum requirements for instantaneous reserve
  • Simplified verification processes
  • Implementation of the BMWK roadmap “System Stability”

Why is VDE-AR-N 4130 important?

  • Guarantees grid connection in compliance with European law
  • Increases system stability with growing feed-in of renewable energies
  • Creates planning and investment security for operators and grid operators
